Abstract : An experimental investigation was carried out for the heat transfer characteristics in a Shell and Tube Heat
Exchanger for the varying concentrations of the MgO nanofluid. The characterisation of nanoparticle was done by FESEM,
EDX and FTIR analyses. The nanofluid of concentrations 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.03% were prepared by dissolving in 5%
glycerol/water base fluid with Polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) as surfactant. The composition was taken based on weight
basis. Water was passed on the shell side (cold side) at varying flowrates and Nanofluid was passed on the tube side (hot
side)of the heat exchanger at a constant flowrate of about 800ml/min. When the overall heat transfer efficiencies of the
MgO/water systems for the three concentrations were compared, it was observed that the 0.03% MgO/water system was
found to be more effective compared to the 0.01% and 0.02%. The experimental results were validated using ANN
(Artificial Neural Network) on MATLAB software.
